First Dream

I asked Oona this morning if she had any dreams and she nodded.

“The boy in school had a BLUE kindle.”

“Oh,” I said “Which boy? What’s his name?”

She thinks for a while “They call him Joe. Yeah. Joe.”

“Was he a Butterfly?” I asked.

“No, he belongs to the hallway”

Why?

Mark the calendars, today is the first day ever of the question ‘Why?’

So far she’s only asked it 4-5 times.

Two changes…

  1. Dinner is a continuing struggle. Every night we make food for her and she throws the plate on the floor. It’s driving both of us a little crazy. The challenge is that she seems to be incredibly hungry and grouchy when she leaves school, so we’ve been getting her a snack on the way home. But I think that’s ruining her appetite. So starting today, no snacks on the way home. If that doesn’t help, we may have to start picking her up earlier so she can eat earlier.
  2. The Fix. Dave and I have admittedly been inconsistent when it comes to the pacifier rule. She seems to really need (want?) it sometimes, but we both feel like it’s encouraging a bad habit. For a while we were saying she could only have it at bedtime (unless she was really upset) and she seemed ok with that. But lately, she’s been really upset a lot, so we’ve gotten into the habit of giving it to her pretty frequently. So (re)starting today, no pacifier except in the crib. I hope we’re doing the right thing, I’m not entirely sure… 🙁

Potty training!

We started 3 days ago. Two nights in a row of sitting on the potty for 15mins reading books. It’s a good thing she likes books so much! And this morning, I saw that she looked like she needed to poop, so we rushed off to the potty – she looked confused and didn’t want to sit at first, but then she did and she pooped!! We cheered. She kept looking down into the potty and then back up at us like ‘is this a good thing?’ So cute.

No!

So it started out as an imitation of “You Monkeys You” from the book Caps for Sale. She’d make a little L out of her thumb and first finger and shake her fist and say “doh doh doh”…

Now the “doh’s” have turned into full blown No’s, and she walks around going “no no no no no” and shakes her head and wags her finger in the air. Sometimes she even does it to us, but mostly she’s (I think) reminding herself what she’s not allowed to do. So she’ll sit on the sofa and try to reach the lamp, where I always say “Oona, no thank you!” but now I see her beat me to it — I’ll see her shaking her head saying “No. No.” as she’s reaching for the lamp. hehehee.

The best though was about a week ago… She’s also in a phase where she likes to pick up her bowl and dump the contents of her dinner on the floor. I usually get her to stop before it goes too far, but the other day she was particularly aggressive about it and I gave her a very serious, very stern NO! and snapped my finger at her. And what did she do? She furrowed her brow, gave me the look of death evil baby face, and immitating me, yelled NO! back at me, all the while shaking her whole arm, shoulder and finger at me with this teenaged “No you di’nt, bitch!” getto move. When she saw my stunned expression she burst out laughing!! A big hysterical belly laugh. And then the little fucker threw a piece of cheese at me! My mouth was hanging open, and then I burst out laughing too and tried to get my stern face back on. But she was just so damned cute!!!! No use at all. She’s gonna walk all over me, I can see it now.

Milestones!

Oona has started pointing at everything! So we’ve been naming everything for her.

She can squat down and touch her toes when you say “where are oona’s toes” and she drums her fingers on her temples when you say “where’s oona’s head”. When you say “where’s oona’s belly” though, she also drums her fingers on her temples, but we’re working on that.

VERY close to walking. Should be any day now.

Her coughing has been all gone after starting Pulmicort, but for some reason she’s been coughing again this week. Hopefully it’ll just go away.

The First Big Ouchie!

Trying to get around a door, Oona pulled it towards herself with such great force that she created this lump, the size of a golf ball. She’s just too strong for her own good! Note the purple bruise forming down the middle of it. Wah. Poor little girl. 🙁

Oona’s First Game

Tonight Oona played Peek-a-Boo with me! She was on the changing table and was holding the feet of her PJs when she got this glint in her eyes and raised the fabric up over her face. Whe she pulled it down, I yelled PEEK-A-BOO and she burst out laughing. So she did it again. And again. And again. And again. And again! So smart!!

Stringing Syllables

Not sure when she started doing it exactly, but in the last few days she’s started stringing syllables together as she babbles… A Day Day Day Day… Ba Ba Ba… A Da Da Da Da… Gay Gay Gay Gay…

And just in case doing it all day long wasn’t cute enough, it’s getting on 3:45am and she’s been babbling for the last 2 hours!

Ah the pleasures of having a sick baby who suddenly finds herself feeling all better in the middle of the night. (She has pink eye and a stuffy, coughy cold.) After taking her out of bed, feeding her, changing her and putting drops in her eyes, she’s STILL wide awake and wants to play. So now she’s in her ExerSaucer, and she’s been hopping around, laughing and dancing to little lights and noisy toys for the last half hour.

Persistence. Determination. Success!

She’s crawling!

Tonight, after thinking it over, and then wiggling forward a bit, she took 4 heaving lunges to reach my toes across the rug. And then when her dad got home, she got up on all fours and thrust herself towards him, mouth open, hands reaching, in order to give him a big kiss on the cheek.

Picked Oona up from school today — got a big happy smile when she heard my voice behind her. Then her little friends wanted to see who was there, too!!

Pre-Crawling. Hooray!

Oona is now mobile.

A few days ago she dragged herself from one end of the long black couch to the other. Just now she made a heroic effort to get from one end of her play mat all the way to the other in order to grab a *ohshitIgottachildproofthishouserightaway* bag of zip ties. I quickly replaced the zip ties with a little toy cow, just out of reach. She screamed. And scritched. And threw her little tushie in the air with her legs moving like a little frog. And she somehow managed to slide about 2 inches. Just enough for one little hand to reach out and grab the cow and pull it in to herself.

I burst out cheering and congratulating her and clapping with all my might — I think I startled her with the commotion cause she looked up at me with worry, but then a HUGE grin overtook her face as she realized that I was cheering for her!

She kissed me!

I play this game with Oona daily which I call Kiss Attack. I say “I’m… going… to… kissyourcheeks” and kiss her cheeks really fast on both sides. She squeals and looks like she can’t stand it she’s so happy.

So the last few times I played Kiss Attack with her, I saw that she kept trying to get me back. So yesterday I let her. She grabbed my hair and pulled my face to her, opened her mouth wide, and just pressed her mouth up against my cheek and held it… A big wet, slimy, licky kiss from my cheek up to my eye.

Aww, Oona, I love you!

Working on Crawling

I think she may have it soon, though it’s supposedly way too early… But she can prop herself up on her elbows, and she’s moving her knees in and out… She BADLY wants to move around. I am certainly in no rush!

Oh, and this weekend she started to suck her thumb. CUTE.

Pacifier in. Pacifier out. Pacifier… almost. got. it. just. about. in…

The last few days Oona’s been working on getting that pacifier back in her mouth after she takes it out. Sometimes she hits her eye, sometimes her cheek, sometimes she starts crying as her hand gets caught between her mouth and the pacifier… But occasionally, and somewhat more regularly, it is actually ending up IN her mouth again. *slurp slurp*

She’s a flippin’ fiend!

Oona can now roll over from her tummy to her back, and from her back to her tummy! She seems to like her newfound freedom. I’m not so sure — I found her in her crib this morning lying sideways with one leg sticking out between the bars! Oy. Keeping my fingers crossed that the crib bumper pad comes today!!

Puppet Show!

Moishe does a little puppet show for Oona using Jane’s stuffed mermaid at the Smoochdome Fundraiser setup. This is the first time she has ever laughed at a toy. SO HAPPY!!
