First Dream

I asked Oona this morning if she had any dreams and she nodded.

“The boy in school had a BLUE kindle.”

“Oh,” I said “Which boy? What’s his name?”

She thinks for a while “They call him Joe. Yeah. Joe.”

“Was he a Butterfly?” I asked.

“No, he belongs to the hallway”

I take it and pretend to eat it, but she protests with indignation, “Don’t eeeeeat it!”

So I look at it and pretend to stick it to my forehead

Long pause

She looks at me like I just threw up on her shoes “Ohhhhh Mooooooomy. Look at your forehead! That’s IS’CUSTING”

Twisted Words

Oona has quite a talent for playing with words. At 2.5 she’s already making puns and playing with the sounds that letters make…

P-eeew P-eeew (for poop)

she’s changed my name to Moppy

Dave’s name is Datt-y

She says things like Fun, funny fun fun fun… No nuh nuh no no no…

New shoes

I finally got Oona new shoes. Weeks of her saying “too tight!” finally over. So 4 pairs arrive from Amazon and she excitedly tries each pair on. Twice. I started cleaning up and as I walked away with all the shoe boxes she looks at me, upset and wants one of the shoe boxes back. So I give her one and she puts her purple shoes in it. I start walking away again and again she looks up at me really upset and starts motioning like she wants something. “What’s the matter? Do you want something?” and she looks up at me with this sad dog look on her face and pats her shoes in their box and says “Blankie?” She wanted the tissue paper that wraps the shoes up!

Two changes…

  1. Dinner is a continuing struggle. Every night we make food for her and she throws the plate on the floor. It’s driving both of us a little crazy. The challenge is that she seems to be incredibly hungry and grouchy when she leaves school, so we’ve been getting her a snack on the way home. But I think that’s ruining her appetite. So starting today, no snacks on the way home. If that doesn’t help, we may have to start picking her up earlier so she can eat earlier.
  2. The Fix. Dave and I have admittedly been inconsistent when it comes to the pacifier rule. She seems to really need (want?) it sometimes, but we both feel like it’s encouraging a bad habit. For a while we were saying she could only have it at bedtime (unless she was really upset) and she seemed ok with that. But lately, she’s been really upset a lot, so we’ve gotten into the habit of giving it to her pretty frequently. So (re)starting today, no pacifier except in the crib. I hope we’re doing the right thing, I’m not entirely sure… 🙁

Mornings

Now that Oona can talk, it’s insanely cute in the morning to wake up hearing this teeny little voice calling out “Mommy.” … “Mommy.” … “Mommy.”

Talking up a storm…

It’s hard to explain the huge leap that Oona has taken with language. It seems like she knows hundreds of words, and can communicate nearly anything she wants. And the way she says things so damned cute!! All the animal sounds, pronunciations… Here are a few phrases:

  • Moe tata? Mo tata, peas (More cracker, please)
  • Bapple (waffle). Ex (eggs). Jews (Juice). A-Wawddahs (water)
  • Foon (spoon). Fock (fork).
  • Don-wantit… Don-wantit… (If you’re trying to get her to eat something)
  • A Sawwwwh (Her yellow dinosaur)
  • Lello. Puhpul. Gree. Boo. (Colors)
  • One. Twoooo. Tree. Fo-wah. sIX. Sewen. Et. Nine. Den. (Note the omission of five, which she always forgets)
  • A-B-Scees
  • Awwt (art)
  • Nena. Da-daddy. Pop-ax.
  • Bye’ies (berry) Sye-i-ie (strawberry).
  • Hosie (horsie). Effent (elephant). Honey (hyena). Lillah (gorilla). Doe-gie (doggie). Chich-chen (chicken). MOEse (mouse).
  • Fix (pacifier)
  • Bap (bat). Punkin (pumpkin).
  • Emmo (Elmo – for a while there she was calling him “Eh-Mama” and then just “Mama”. So every time she’d see an Elmo book she’d point at him and say “Mama”. It became this running gag where I’d roll my eyes at her and laugh and say “No, *I’M* Mama!! ” So cute!!!)

The other day I was trying to remember what her first word was and I blanked for a minute… Since I finally remembered, I want to write it down now… The first word she really said was Quack. She was imitating a stuffed duck which quacked “quack-quackquackquackquackquackquackquack” and she would say “ya-ya-ya-ya-ya”. Her first real English word was “That”, and she’d walk around pointing to everything in site saying “That. That.”

DaTU = Thank You
My’s = Mine
Saii-ie = Stroller
She used to say Aw-wah for water, but now says Waddah and sounds like an old Jewish woman.

Um, when I said she was saying NO a lot…

I didn’t realize that that was the tip of the iceberg. Not all no’s are created equal. Now, there’s NONONONONONOWAAAAAAAEEEEEKKKKKKKNONONONO! We’re in serious, serious, demanding land. What a character she is!!! So strong. I admire that life force in her!

No!

So it started out as an imitation of “You Monkeys You” from the book Caps for Sale. She’d make a little L out of her thumb and first finger and shake her fist and say “doh doh doh”…

Now the “doh’s” have turned into full blown No’s, and she walks around going “no no no no no” and shakes her head and wags her finger in the air. Sometimes she even does it to us, but mostly she’s (I think) reminding herself what she’s not allowed to do. So she’ll sit on the sofa and try to reach the lamp, where I always say “Oona, no thank you!” but now I see her beat me to it — I’ll see her shaking her head saying “No. No.” as she’s reaching for the lamp. hehehee.

The best though was about a week ago… She’s also in a phase where she likes to pick up her bowl and dump the contents of her dinner on the floor. I usually get her to stop before it goes too far, but the other day she was particularly aggressive about it and I gave her a very serious, very stern NO! and snapped my finger at her. And what did she do? She furrowed her brow, gave me the look of death evil baby face, and immitating me, yelled NO! back at me, all the while shaking her whole arm, shoulder and finger at me with this teenaged “No you di’nt, bitch!” getto move. When she saw my stunned expression she burst out laughing!! A big hysterical belly laugh. And then the little fucker threw a piece of cheese at me! My mouth was hanging open, and then I burst out laughing too and tried to get my stern face back on. But she was just so damned cute!!!! No use at all. She’s gonna walk all over me, I can see it now.
