Someone yelled at us on the bus :-(
Oona and I took the bus home from school today and some jerk yelled at us. She didn’t want to sit down, and she didn’t want to stand near me, so I forced her to sit on my lap and she was crying. After a little while this guy turns around and says “Make your kid to shut up already!” I mumbled under my breath “You’ve obviously never had kids.” and then he yelled at me “GET HER TO SHUT THE FUCK UP ALREADY!” — I was shocked into silence, but the bus driver, who was helping a woman in a wheelchair get on the bus threatened to throw him off the bus if he didn’t get himself under control. An a bunch of other people in the front of the bus yelled out “Cry louder!”
Wow.

Oona at the Intrepid this weekend
This morning Oona and I decided to get out of the house and go see the USS New York, which is only docked here for a few days, but the line to get in was about 10 blocks long! So instead, we went to the Intrepid museum. Oona had a blast! These shots are on the deck upstairs, but there’s a whole level inside with interactive displays like helicopters to climb in, boats to ride on, and even a space capsule!

Mom: “Are you a Dinosaur?”
Oona nods
Mom: “Are you an Oona-saurus?”
Oona: “Rex”
Mom: “You’re an Oonasaurus Rex?”
Oona nods

Two changes…
- Dinner is a continuing struggle. Every night we make food for her and she throws the plate on the floor. It’s driving both of us a little crazy. The challenge is that she seems to be incredibly hungry and grouchy when she leaves school, so we’ve been getting her a snack on the way home. But I think that’s ruining her appetite. So starting today, no snacks on the way home. If that doesn’t help, we may have to start picking her up earlier so she can eat earlier.
- The Fix. Dave and I have admittedly been inconsistent when it comes to the pacifier rule. She seems to really need (want?) it sometimes, but we both feel like it’s encouraging a bad habit. For a while we were saying she could only have it at bedtime (unless she was really upset) and she seemed ok with that. But lately, she’s been really upset a lot, so we’ve gotten into the habit of giving it to her pretty frequently. So (re)starting today, no pacifier except in the crib. I hope we’re doing the right thing, I’m not entirely sure… 🙁

Mornings
Now that Oona can talk, it’s insanely cute in the morning to wake up hearing this teeny little voice calling out “Mommy.” … “Mommy.” … “Mommy.”

Talking up a storm…
It’s hard to explain the huge leap that Oona has taken with language. It seems like she knows hundreds of words, and can communicate nearly anything she wants. And the way she says things so damned cute!! All the animal sounds, pronunciations… Here are a few phrases:
- Moe tata? Mo tata, peas (More cracker, please)
- Bapple (waffle). Ex (eggs). Jews (Juice). A-Wawddahs (water)
- Foon (spoon). Fock (fork).
- Don-wantit… Don-wantit… (If you’re trying to get her to eat something)
- A Sawwwwh (Her yellow dinosaur)
- Lello. Puhpul. Gree. Boo. (Colors)
- One. Twoooo. Tree. Fo-wah. sIX. Sewen. Et. Nine. Den. (Note the omission of five, which she always forgets)
- A-B-Scees
- Awwt (art)
- Nena. Da-daddy. Pop-ax.
- Bye’ies (berry) Sye-i-ie (strawberry).
- Hosie (horsie). Effent (elephant). Honey (hyena). Lillah (gorilla). Doe-gie (doggie). Chich-chen (chicken). MOEse (mouse).
- Fix (pacifier)
- Bap (bat). Punkin (pumpkin).
- Emmo (Elmo – for a while there she was calling him “Eh-Mama” and then just “Mama”. So every time she’d see an Elmo book she’d point at him and say “Mama”. It became this running gag where I’d roll my eyes at her and laugh and say “No, *I’M* Mama!! ” So cute!!!)
The other day I was trying to remember what her first word was and I blanked for a minute… Since I finally remembered, I want to write it down now… The first word she really said was Quack. She was imitating a stuffed duck which quacked “quack-quackquackquackquackquackquackquack” and she would say “ya-ya-ya-ya-ya”. Her first real English word was “That”, and she’d walk around pointing to everything in site saying “That. That.”

Halloween — The OonaBee
Photos from Halloween. Oona’s wearing a bumble-bee costume that I made for her (thanks Dave for sewing the second black stripe on when I ran out of time). Dave went as a flower and I went as a bee-keeper. Note to self: Next year, don’t make a costume that requires my face to be covered. It was so annoying!!

Cute words…
AH-saws = Dinosaurs
MOEse = Mouse
DaTU = Thank You
My’s = Mine
Saii-ie = Stroller
She used to say Aw-wah for water, but now says Waddah and sounds like an old Jewish woman.

Potty training!
We started 3 days ago. Two nights in a row of sitting on the potty for 15mins reading books. It’s a good thing she likes books so much! And this morning, I saw that she looked like she needed to poop, so we rushed off to the potty – she looked confused and didn’t want to sit at first, but then she did and she pooped!! We cheered. She kept looking down into the potty and then back up at us like ‘is this a good thing?’ So cute.

Um, when I said she was saying NO a lot…
I didn’t realize that that was the tip of the iceberg. Not all no’s are created equal. Now, there’s NONONONONONOWAAAAAAAEEEEEKKKKKKKNONONONO! We’re in serious, serious, demanding land. What a character she is!!! So strong. I admire that life force in her!
